Maldives Police Service has said that the number of new people getting into illegal has been reduced in the past six months.
Sharing the statistics and work being done against illegal drugs at the press conference held at Iskandharu Koshi today, Head of the Drug Enforcement Department, Superintendent of police, Ahmed Shifan said that the number of people going into drugs have gone down in the past ten months.
Superintendent Shifan said that first time uses of illegal narcotics were arrested in cases related to cannabis, hash oil, soft drugs and alcohol. And so big changes have taken place in the society.
The Superintendent also noted that the number of repeat offenders have neither increased or decreased.
Drugs confiscated in the past six months:
• Polyethylene Packets – 1473
• Cellophane Pieces – 455
• Bullets – 120
• Alcohol Bottles – 622
• Beer cans – 226
• LSD – 53
• Hash Oil in film canisters – 36
• Controlled drugs – 89
Superintendent Shifan said that 975 people were arrested in drug related cases in the past six months. And while 56 operations were conducted, 47 of those operations were conducted with Faaragema (K-9 Unit).
The Superintendent also noted that the Faaragema plays a huge role in making the drug operations a success.
