Three Police officers attacked after accusing of assaulting a young man

A group from the people of G.A. Villingli has confronted the Police accusing an officer of assaulting a young man resulting in head injuries to three officers.

Police Media Official said that two incidents of attack on officers took place in Villingili today. The first was on an officer who was attending a volleyball match who was attacked and had stones thrown at him resulting in a head wound.

“When the officer with the head injury was taken to the health center for treatment, some of the people of the island gathered near the health center and threatened the officers and threw stones at them. Four more officers were injured during this incident; two of them received head wounds. And the other two officers were struck by stones and received different injuries.” The Police Media Official said.

President of the Villingili Council, Niyaz Nizaar said that the conflict started when a Police Officer working at the island’s station started assaulting young people on his duty. He said that it is only one officer who is doing that and has repeatedly requested the Police not to bring him out on duty.

“I can confirm that a Police officer from this island is assaulting young people. This is not an accusation. There is evidence to see in the photos. That is the truth. We also met the Police regarding the matter. They said that PIC (Police Integrity Commission) is investigating the matter.” The President of the Council, Niyaz said.

The Police Media Official said that they are investigating a case about an officer assaulting a young mand in the island.

In response to a possible conflict between the Police and the people of the island due the tension between the two, Police have deployed numerous officers to Villingili.

There have been no arrests so far regarding the conflict in the island today.
