Parliament passes amendment to allow one-hour debate on VP nomination

The Amendment Bill to Parliament Rules of Procedure to allow one hour for the debate on the President’s nomination for the post of Vice President, has been passed by the parliament.

The Amendment Bill, submitted by Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, was passed with 51 votes in favour, and 21 against.

A second amendment to the Parliament Rules of Procedure, to expedite the process of voting on Vice President appointment motions, was also passed at today’s sitting.

This amendment would allow voting on such motions on the day it is sent to the parliament floor by the relevant committee.

A no-confidence motion has been filed to the parliament against Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

MPs of ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have said that Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb will be appointed Vice President before Independence Day, 26 July.
