Food prices drop with the end of Ramadan

Food prices at the market in Malé have dropped with the end of Ramadan.

Price drops include the price of coconuts which was up to MVR 30 – 40 has dropped to between MVR 15 – 20. And a kilo of watermelon has come down to MVR 30 – 35 from MVR 40 – 45.

Travellers and the merchants at the Local Market estimates the prices to drop even further in the next two or three days.

“It would be even cheaper tomorrow. There are boats coming from Thoddoo and Kaashidhoo as well.” A merchant at the Market said.

Some of the prices at the Local Market:

- Banana prices has dropped from MVR 5 to MVR 3

- Papaya prices has dropped from MVR 15 – 20 to MVR 5 – 8

- Pineapple prices has dropped from MVR 50 to MVR 35

- Foreign Mango prices has dropped from MVR90 to MVR 40

- Guava prices has dropped from MVR 60 to MVR 35

Like previous years, Maldivian chickens and roosters were sold on this Eid as well. But there are none for sale today.

Yesterday, a rooster was sold between MVR 900 – 1000. And a chicken was sold between MVR 800 – 900.

The expensive food season ends with Ramadan every year. Merchants say that from now on the prices would be going down.
