Dunya: Maldives continues to call for nuclear disarmament

In a statement welcoming the Iran Nuclear Deal, finalised on Tuesday, 14 July 2015, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon has said that the Maldives continues to call for nuclear disarmament, and looks forward to all countries involved approving the agreement.

In the statement published by the Foreign Ministry yesterday, Dunya said, “Today’s agreement is a major contribution towards better diplomatic relations and peace in the region. The Maldives has always advocated for countries to stand together, side by side and choose to close this dark chapter of human history through the eventual prohibition and comprehensive destruction of all nuclear weapons. The Maldives continues to call for nuclear disarmament and looks forward to all countries involved approving this agreement.”

Foreign Ministry said that the pact, between Iran and the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, and Russia, saw the culmination of many years of negotiations and marked an important step towards achieving nuclear disarmament and global peace.

The historic accord redesigns Iran’s nuclear programme to only enrich small amounts of uranium for civilian use and creates an inspection regime to ensure Iran’s compliance.

The negotiations resulted in agreement from the United States and European allies to drop their economic sanctions against Iran, opening up Iran’s access to global markets for oil sales and other areas of economic exchange.
