OHCHR team calls on Foreign Secretary Ali Naseer

Chief of Rule of Law Division of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Mona Rishwami has called on Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday, 14 July 2015.

Foreign Ministry said that during the meeting, the Foreign Secretary briefed the OHCHR team on the current political situation in the Maldives and assured the government’s commitment to upholding the Constitution, the rule of law, and the separation of powers.

Updating the OHCHR team on recent positive developments in the Maldives, the Foreign Secretary talked about the ongoing political dialogue between the government and the opposition political parties to ease the political tension.

He also stressed the importance of cooperation and engagement for a constructive relationship with the High Commissioner’s office, and reiterated the government’s commitment to working with its international partners towards democracy consolidation in the Maldives.

The OHCHR team also met with former President Mohamed Nasheed on Tuesday.

Nasheed is serving a 13-year prison sentence after being convicted of terrorism for ordering the abduction of a judge during his presidency in 2012.

Foreign Ministry tweeted on Tuesday that the government had facilitated a meeting between the OHCHR team and former President Nasheed.
