Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that parents, guardians and teachers are responsible for bringing up children and negligence in fulfilling this responsibility can cause serious harm to children.
In a statement released on the occasion of Children’s day, HRCM noted the importance of providing children a good upbringing in protecting them from unfavorable practices and harm, and said that they should be provided a peaceful environment while growing up.
“As today’s children will be the adults of tomorrow, it is the responsibility of parents, guardians, teachers, and society as whole, to provide them a healthy upbringing. Any negligence in fulfilling this responsibility by any of these parties is a serious harm imposed on children,” reads the statement.
They also said that it is the responsibility of the parents to give children the necessary vaccines at the relevant age in order to assure them good health, provide them with nutritious food, and opportunities for education.
HRCM noted that cases of negligence in bringing up children are few but exist in the Maldives, which results in kids being deprived of their rights and being exposed to danger. They urged to take speedy and constructive action to prevent and resolve such issues.
HRCM expressed hope that the newly established Human Rights Ministry will pay special attention to protection of children’s rights. They called on the government and all relevant parties to take the necessary action to establish a peaceful environment for children.
