MVR 750 fine for blocking pavements

Police have warned that people who block the pavements on the streets of Malé by stacking boxes during loading and unloading, will be fined.

The penalty prescribed in the Land Transport Act for this offence is a fine of MVR 750.

Of late, police have seen an increase in the number of complaints filed by pedestrians who have step off the pavements and walk in high traffic on congested roads.

Police said that this increases the risk for serious accidents, and poses difficulties and distress for pedestrians.

It is common practice in Malé to have boxes stacked on narrow pavements for long periods of time. Many shop owners clean food items such as onions and potatoes on the streets, before taking them into the shops.
