Maldivian has been given the permission to operate flights to Bangladesh.

Civil Aviation said today that the permission was given following an agreement signed between Maldives and Bangladesh last week.

Maldivian’s Head of Administration Ali Nashath said that the agreement gives permission to other Maldivian airlines as well, however, the only Maldivian airline currently allowed to operate international flights is Island Aviation’s ‘Maldivian’.

“We are informed of the permission, which is a general permission allowing Maldivian airlines to operate flights to Bangladesh. But since we are the only airline in Maldives, the permission would be for us, right?” Nashath said.

He mentioned that even though the permit had been granted, no work had commenced to implement it.

“Our Board of Directors was only formed recently. So no work has begun with regard to that,” Nashath said.

Maldivian used to operate flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka, but now only flies to Trivandrum, India.

There are no direct flights between Maldives and Bangladesh. Bangladesh is the country from which Maldives hires most foreign labor.
