Leader of the PPM’s Parliamentary Group and the MP for the Vili-Malé constituency, Ahmed Nihaan Hussain Manik has said that they have information that Vice President of the country, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed had a hand in the opposition protest rally on 1 May.
MP Nihaan told Sun Media that the members of the PPM’s Parliamentary Group have some information that says that Dr. Jameel had a hand in it and the information would be shared with the media at a later date.
The vote of no confidence against the Vice President Dr. Jameel was passed by the PPM/MDA Parliamentary Group last night with the unanimous votes of all 33 members that were present. Both Parties have ordered a three-line whip to vote the motion to take a vote of no confidence against the Vice President.
MP Nihaan said that while Ministers have MPs have been giving interviews about the May-Day protest, the Vice President Dr. Jameel have not said a word about it.
“I called Vice President Jameel myself and asked to come and if he cannot come give an audio interview at least to the media. For example, look at the Home Minister, Umar Naseer. Physically came to TV. He did everything he could to defend the government. But Jameel couldn’t even pick up the phone. He calls back 24-hours later and says that he (Vice President Dr. Jameel) left Malé after looking at the security state.” Nihaan said last night.
MP Nihaan raised the question that if there would be a security threat to the Vice President without a threat to MPs and Cabinet Ministers. And said that in something everyone has to do together, Vice President Jameel is “rowing the wrong way.”
Rumors have spread that Vice President Jameel is being brought down from power to assign the Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Adheeb to the position. Nihaan has previously said that if the Vice President is being replaced, the best candidate for the job is Minister Adheeb.
Adheeb can be assigned as the Vice President after taking a vote of no confidence against the current Vice President, Dr. Jameel. The votes of 2/3 of the parliament are needed to replace the Vice President which is a minimum of 57 votes out of the 85 members.
