Signatures are being collected for the vote of no confidence against the VP

PPM’s Parliamentary Group has started collecting signatures to take a vote of no confidence at the parliament against the Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

An MP with a close relationship with the Tourism Minister, Ahmed Adheeb told Sun Media tonight that they are seeking 29 signatures to take a vote of no confidence. PPM alone has 44 MP at the Parliament.

Once a no confidence case has been submitted, the Parliament has to create a temporary committee. And if the committee decides to relieve the VP from power, it goes to a parliament vote in which 2/3 of the votes of the parliament is needed to put it into effect.

There are total 85 MPs at the parliament which means at least 57 votes are required.

While signatures are being collected to push a no confidence vote, the age for candidacy for a Vice President has been reduced to 30 years in a recent vote.

According to PPM’s MP Sujaau, the target of the PPM Parliamentary Group is to make the Tourism Minister, Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor the new Vice President before 26 July celebrating 50 years of Maldivian Independence.

Parties represented at the parliament are as follows:

- PPM: 44 Members

- MDP: 21 Members

- JP: 11 Members

- MDA: 5 Members

- Adhaalath Party: 1 Member

- Independent Members: 3
