President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom has told the Secretary General, of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon that there aren’t any political prisoners in the Maldives.
President Yamin and the Secretary General discussed the Maldivian political state over the phone earlier this evening.
Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali told Sun Media tonight that President Yamin said that there aren’t any political prisoners but there are political figures among criminal prisoners.
“There won’t be any political prisoners in the Maldives, but there are some political figures among the serious criminal prisoners.” Spokesperson Muaz said going into the details of the conversation.
Spokesperson Muaz said that President Yamin invited the special team from the U.N. to cool down the political state of the country while noting the U.N. support in the matter.
The U.N. has asked the Maldivian government to respond to the case presented to the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention by the former president Mohamed Nasheed who is serving a 13-year prison sentence.
