Four arrested for daytime eating during Ramadan

Four people have been arrested so far this year for eating during the day during Ramadan.

The police spokesperson told Sun Online that seven cases have been reported regarding eating during the day this Ramadan, and the four suspects are Maldivian men.

Three suspects have been given detention periods of seven days while the remaining person received five days, say police.

All the arrests were made in Malé.

The usual penalty issued by the Criminal Court for eating during Ramadan is a fine of MVR 150. In a few cases though, people have been sentenced to six months in prison for this offence.
