JP suggests changing laws to free politicians

Jumhooree Party (JP) has requested the government to change relevant laws to free arrested politicians.

JP made this request during a meeting with the government yesterday.

JP Deputy Leader and Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz told Sun Online that other suggestions made during the meeting include holding all-party discussions, and commencing efforts to change the conditions causing losses for JP Leader Gasim Ibrahim’s businesses.

“Government officials said that these issues will be discussed with the President and a decision will be informed at the next meeting,” Riyaz said.

On 18 May, the government announced that it was ready for dialogue with the opposition on three issues.

The three areas of discussions suggested by the government are finding legal solutions to the ongoing political unrest, consolidating democracy and strengthening the constitutional and judicial systems, and ensuring development and progress for the country.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed is serving a 13-year prison sentence, former Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim is serving an 11-year prison sentence, and Adhaalath Party (AP) President Sheikh Imran Abdulla is in police custody awaiting trial, for alleged terrorism.
