Organisers notified to end three-day protest at midnight

Police have informed organisers of the protest scheduled for today, led by main opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), to end the protest 12:00 a.m. tonight.

Chief Superintendent of Police Abdulla Nawaz said at a press conference at Iskandar Building that a meeting was held with the organisers this afternoon, during which they assured the police that protesters will not engage in any illegal activities.

Nawaz did not disclose who were present at the meeting held with the organisers of the protest, which will also attended by Adhaalath Party (AP).

Organisers have said that protesters will stage a sit-down on Majeedee Magu.

When asked if action will be taken if the protest is not concluded at midnight, Nawaz said that this will be decided based on the circumstances pertinent at that time.

He said that steps will be taken to “protect against any adverse consequences” of a group of people staging a sit-down on Majeedee Magu.

Police have urged organisers to ensure that traffic and pedestrians are not disturbed by the demonstration.

They have also assured to cooperate with protesters if the assembly is peaceful and lawful.
