Adhaalath Party (AP) and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have been fined MVR 69,000 and MVR 53,000 respectively, following the violent protest in Malé on 1 May.
EC said in a statement that protesters violated the Political Parties Act and Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, incited violence, attacked police officers, and caused damage to public property during the protest.
The commission said that the fine also follows repeated failure by the parties to heed notifications sent by the commission and Maldives Police Service.
The parties were fined under Article 48 of the Political Parties Act, after they violated Article7 of the Political Parties Act and Article 9 of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, said EC.
Both parties have been notified to pay the fines within seven days.
