Chief Superintendent of Police, Abdulla Navaaz has indicated the opposition rally being organized for Friday by the biggest opposition party MDP would not be allowed without sending an official notice to the Police.
Speaking to the press at Iskandharu Koshi, Superintendent Navaaz said that the rally is being held according to the peaceful protest law; the organizers must send the notice to the Police. And the Police would not accept a rally without the notice as a legitimate rally.
“It is stated in the peaceful protest law how to proceed if a rally is being held after planning, if they proceed any other way, we would believe they are proceeding outside the law. So the Police would not allow anything to go outside the law.” Superintendent Navaaz said.
Referring to the law of peaceful protest, he said that the notice to the Police has to be sent 36 hours before the rally but so far, the Police have received no notice as per the Friday’s rally.
Superintendent Navaaz said that they cannot provide safety and protection to a protest rally that does not abide by the law and the power given to the Police by the constitution would be used to stop an illegal protest.
