High Court has upheld Criminal Court’s decision to remand Jumhooree Party (JP) member Sobah Rasheed in custody.
Sobah was arrested on suspicion of inciting violence at the mass rally in Malé on 1 May.
High Court said at the appeal case hearing today that the reason stated by Criminal Court in its decision to remand Sobah in custody for 15 days, was to ensure public safety.
The court said that Sobah’s remarks at the protest and evidence presented by police including an Intelligence Report were sufficient to prove to the court that his release could threaten public safety.
Sobah’s 15-day remand period approved by Criminal Court will expire tomorrow.
In addition to Sobah, President of Adhaalath Party (AP) Imran Abdulla and Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed also remain in police custody in relation to the protest.
High Court has also upheld Criminal Court’s decision to remand them in custody.
The court has however ruled to release Deputy Leader of JP Ameen Ibrahim.
