MTDC accounts released after USD 5.9 million payment

The accounts of Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) which was frozen by MIRA have been released after the company paid USD 5.9 million to MIRA.

At an interview today with Sun Media, the Acting-Managing Director of MTDC, Ahmed Niyaz said that the company accounts have been released now that the USD 5.9 million has been paid to MIRA for the two islands that was leased to the company on 2006 and 2007.

“The payment has been paid after discussing with the government and MIRA. So the accounts have now been released.” Niyaz said.

MIRA has frozen the accounts of 11 companies which include Villa Shipping, Villa Holidays and Villa Hotels and Resorts of the famous merchant, Qasim Ibrahim.

MIRA says that Villa has to pay more than USD 90 million to the state.

Other accounts that has been frozen includes, Yacht Tours of Abdulla Jabir, MTDC, Asia Resorts Pvt. Ltd., JH Resorts Pvt. Ltd., Jazeera Pvt. Ltd., AAA Company, Medhufushi Lagoon investment, Exotic Properties, Kanifushi Investments and the accounts of Ahmed Waheed and Abdulla Ali.

Chairman of Yacht Tours, Abdulla Jabir has said that he has notified the Tourism Ministry that the money owed by the company would be paid in a single payment. There is no indication whether that payment has been paid yet or not.
