1953 illegal foreigners were deported this year

Department of Immigration and Emigration has said that they have deported 1953 foreigners living the Maldives illegally with the implementation of the policy regarding lowering numbers of illegal immigrants in the country.

A press release issued by Immigration today said that 13 operations have taken place in the year so far. And 34 illegal immigrants were detained in yesterday’s operation. The operation yesterday took place near the sand loading point of the T-jetty.

Immigration said that social and financial issues are on the rise with the increase of the number of illegal immigrants in the country. And the government intends to take steps in the near future to resolve such issues.

The press release from the Department Immigration said that 105 foreigners were sent back to their country due to their medical conditions in the past year. And this year, 36 foreigners have been sent back to their country so far.

Immigration has said on a previous occasion that more than 8,800 illegal immigrants were sent back to their countries last year. And 282 foreigners were deported due to criminal involvement.
