High Court has upheld the remand period of 15 days granted by Criminal Court, for Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed.
The verdict from the panel of High Court Judges today said the Supreme Court has declared the guidelines to be considered when extending the remand period.
And it says that although there isn’t enough evidence to charge the suspect, the type, seriousness and nature of the crime has to be considered by the judges when extending the remand period.
The verdict also said that the things to be considered and taking the decision is on the hands of the judges after reviewing the evidence presented.
It said that after reviewing the charge which Ali Waheed has been suspected of, and points noted in the Police report of how the crime took place, enough evidence was presented to the Criminal Court to suspect him of the crime.
Police arrested Ali Waheed for supporting and encourage confrontation between the protestors and the security forces at the opposition protest on 1 May.
