The Council of Thaa Vilufushi has requested the government to move the tsunami monument to Vilufushi.
This follows the government’s decision to move the monument to another location, to facilitate the construction of the bridge between Malé and Hulhulé.
President of Vilufushi Council, in a letter to Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu, highlighted that Vilufushi was the island which suffered most damage, and where death toll was highest in the Maldives due to the tsunami.
He said that to date, there was no monument in the island to commemorate the victims.
On 7 May, the government said the Malé-end of the bridge will be at the tsunami monument area.
Housing Minister Dr Muizzu said that efforts were ongoing to decide the new location of the tsunami monument, most likely in Malé.
