President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that it will not be easy for young leaders to progress within Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The President made this comment while addressing the people of Hdh. Nolhivaram.

President Waheed said that he himself had represented MDP at one time, and that he played a major role in MDP’s creation. He noted that many people are not aware of this.

“I was the one who went to Kulhudhuffushi to hold MDP’s first meeting there. So I have been part of MDP. But sometimes it’s good to keep a distance from things. That’s how I was compelled to leave MDP. The reason why I left MDP is being revealed now,” the President said.

He said that because of the way MDP leadership functions, it is hard for young leaders to progress in the party.

“I hope all internal issues in MDP are resolved, and that the party is encouraged to progress,” he said.

He also said that the political atmosphere in the Maldives will improve with well-established political parties, thus Maldivians would like to see the day when MDP, as well as other parties, are politically strong.

“The parties should work together, and the election should be won by capable, young people. With the success of people like our Vice President (Waheeddeen), the state can progress at a fast pace. Regardless of who is in power, the rest of the people have to cooperate. Even though we compete during elections, once the elections are over, and people assume their positions, the islands and the country will benefit the most if we work together. Everyone has to work together in order to progress. I am confident that all the citizens of this island will continue to work together,” the President said.

While addressing the people of the island, the President highlighted the people’s main concerns and assured the people that necessary measures would be taken to solve the issues.
