K9 unit finds drugs in Maafushi Prison

A special operation by the Police Drug Enforcement Department with the use of Faaragema (K9 unit) has found drugs in Maafushi Prison.

Speaking at a press conference at the Iskandharu Koshi, Superintendent of Police, Ahmed Shifan said that the operation took place on Tuesday evening. And it was a 14 hour operation.

“We found a variety of drugs in our search of the prison. We found 25 cellophane bags as in rubber packets of hash oil. And five packets suspected of heroin. And a large number of phones, SIM cards and phone chargers were found. These are random operations we conduct randomly. Cells and confinement areas are places we give a special attention to.” Superintendent Shifan said.

At the press conference today, Superintendent Shifan also shared the latest police work in the fight against the increase in alcohol in Maldives. He said that on 28 April, five foreigners were arrested with 69 bottles of alcohol at M. Randhoadhi. And said that the Police are looking for more believe related to the case.”

The Superintendent said that a day later, a large number of alcohol bottles found at a warehouse near Marble Hotel were related to the Hotel. And has requested the Tourism Ministry and Economic Ministry to take steps against Marble Hotel.

Superintendent Shifan said that the warehouse the alcohol was stored in belonged to Marble Hotel.

“In this we want to note that commercial establishments are within the tourism sector or other economic sectors, with different permits or Economic Ministry can give permits for different trades. Alcohol trade would be allowed with a specific permit. We are taking steps against places without these permits.” Superintendent Shifan said.
