Remand extension for Ameen appealed

An appeal case has been filed by the legal team representing Deputy Leader of Ameen Ibrahim, regarding the extension of the period of remand for Ameen, who was arrested during the mass rally by opposition groups in Malé on Friday.

The case was filed to Criminal Court this morning.

Criminal Court remanded Ameen in custody for 15 days on Saturday, saying that his release could threaten social security.

Police said that Ameen’s speech at the rally encouraged protesters to engage in violence, which resulted in clashes and attacks on police officers.

Speaking at the protest, Ameen described the mass rally for which people from the islands travelled to Malé, a ‘jihad’ to save future generations.

In addition to Ameen, the court on Saturday also remanded President of Adhaalath Party (AP) Imran Abdulla and Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed in custody for 15 days.

Addressing protesters on Friday, Imran said that the opposition’s purpose was to find justice for the Maldivians who had shed blood for the sake of their country, and the protest would not end until this is achieved.
