Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has called to facilitate the provision of information to journalists, and for citizens to appreciate and understand the important role of media in a democracy.
In a press release issued today, the commission congratulated all journalists in Maldives on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, and stated that journalists play an important role in a democratic country.
“...we note and appreciate the work of journalists for bringing the right information to the people, and for facing challenges in various dangerous situations.”
The statement stressed the importance of bringing unbiased information, upholding behavioural standards in journalism, practicing journalism such that it is beneficial to the society and country, protecting and respecting human rights, and encouraging friendship and respect in the society.
The statement also called on state institutions and other groups to refrain from obstructing freedom of journalism. To establish an environment where journalism is unobstructed would allow and encourage journalists to carry out their responsibilities.
