Author Shafeeg dies

Historian and author Ahmed Shafeeg, H. Shafeeguge, Malé, has passed away in the early hours of Friday morning.

The funeral prayer was held at Aasahara Mosque after Friday prayer.

His latest book, “A day in the life of Ahmed Shafeeg”, was launched on 10 October 2010 by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

While preparations were ongoing to launch the book, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom accused Shafeeg of fabricating stories and pressed defamation charges.

On 31 July 2012, Civil Court found Shafeeg guilty of defamation, and ordered him in absentia to pay MVR 5,000 to Gayoom.

Shafeeg accused Gayoom’s government of confiscating and destroying without his consent, his history diaries dating back to 1945.
