Gasim meets with Chief Justice at Supreme Court

Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has met with Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed at Supreme Court.

In response to a question by Sun Online as he left the court, Gasim said that he visited the court in relation to a case in Civil Court filed by Villa Holiday Private Limited, against Ministry of Tourism.

Civil Court has ruled against the ministry regarding its decision to terminate the agreements for Kaafu Bolidhuffaru and Vaavu Vehdhifalhu. The ruling has however been overturned by High Court.

Gasim said that he met with the Chief Justice today to ask about why the case was rejected when appealed in Supreme Court, and he was told by the Chief Justice to submit his concerns in writing.

Meanwhile, Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has notified Villa Group to settle the MVR 100 million owed to the government within 30 days, and warned to freeze Villa Group’s accounts if it defaulted on this payment.

Gasim said that MIRA’s threat to freeze Villa Group’s accounts was unjust, and the court has been requested for an injunction on this until the conclusion of the trial.

He also claimed that the termination of the agreements related to Villa Group’s businesses by the government, was unjust.

Freezing the accounts would affect the over 5,000 people employed by the company, he said.

Earlier today, Civil Court denied the request for an order to delay the implementation of the government’s decision to terminate the agreements for Kaafu Maadhiggaru and Kaafu Kanuhura lagoons, leased to Villa Holiday, a subsidiary of Villa Group.
