Merchants of Vilufushi sends petition to President Yamin

The merchants of Thaa Atoll Vilufushi have petitioned to President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom regarding the cancellation of electrical subsidies to merchants.

The petitioned signed by 22 merchants of Vilufushi says that they now get the bare minimum after paying all the expenses. And the expenses have risen exponentially with the cancellation of the subsidies.

“To settle the electric bill, today, we are forced to raise the prices of services or goods.” The petition said.

The merchants of Vilufushi has requested the President to resume the subsidies or to change the merchant electrical prices to the same as for normal citizens.

Protests have begun in many islands with cancellation of electrical subsidies to merchants. Demonstrations have occurred in Kulhudhuffushi and Addu City.
