Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Vice President Alhan Fahmy, who was removed from his post yesterday, has said that former President Mohamed Nasheed felt it was suitable to hand over all powers of the state to Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group (PG) President Abdullah Yameen, and held discussions in this regard with MDP Parliamentary Group.
Speaking on DhiTV last night, Alhan said that prior to Nasheed’s most recent visit to India, he met with MDP PG at Traders Hotel and said that he intends to hand over the government to Yameen, and that he had already made an appointment with Yameen to discuss this issue. He showed MDP PG members text messages sent in this regard:
“He met with us and told us that he intends to hand over the government to Yameen, for Yameen to constitute the government as he wished. He told us after sending text messages to fix the appointment. All PG members of MDP are aware of this. He read the messages out loud from his phone.”
Alhan said that no decision was made that day.
Alhan criticised Nasheed for having considered handing over the government to Yameen, when Nasheed’s own administration had accused Yameen of corruption involving a sum of $800m, and set up a Presidential Commission to investigate that matter.
Alhan also said that everything in the party is passed as per Nasheed’s wishes.
He noted that the proposition to take a vote of no-confidence on Parliament Speaker Abdullah Shahid was made by Nasheed, and thus was passed in the party. However efforts to take this vote till then had not been successful:
“Everything proposed by Nasheed are passed in the party. All he had to do was say that he wanted to take a no-confidence vote on Abdullah Shahid, and it was passed. We had not been successful in doing that all this time.”
