MWSC: Phase one of fire recovery completed

Managing Director of Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, has said that phase one has been completed, of recovering from the fire which occurred on 4 December 2014.

Fazul said this in an interview to Sun Online, in relation to the 20th Anniversary of MWSC.

He said that the fire left the company’s electricity panel boards destroyed, and at present, it is only able to produce 50 percent of the electricity required for water production.

While MWSC was able to generate its own power in the past, it is presently operated with assistance from the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and the government, said Fazul.

He said that a task force has been assembled and the pending issues are expected to be resolved by the end of September 2015.

As part of its contingency plan, MWSC has decided to spread out its machineries in the building, including relocation of generators and panel boards, to minimise damage in the event of a similar incident in the future.

Three water tanks are presently used as reserve in Malé, and efforts are ongoing to increase the number to seven, said Fazul.

Water was cut off in Malé, home to about 130,000 people, for about a week in December 2014 following a fire at the electricity supply system of the water production facility at MWSC.
