Civic education campaign launched

The nationwide civic education campaign has been launched by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik at a ceremony held at Islamic Centre today.

Home Minister Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the program is introduced due to the increase in crime rate and degradation of social conditions in the country. The purpose is to end such trends, restore peace, and enhance solidarity.

“People are urged to keep political competitions friendly, and within the limits of the principles of our religion. If we can do this, there will be no obstacles in establishing a peaceful environment,” Dr Jameel said.

The main ministries partaking in the civic education campaign are Home Ministry, Education Ministry and Islamic Ministry.

The campaign is made up of several elements, which will be carried out in the form of communal activities conducted by civil organisations in collaboration with the public.

The elements are special campaigns to fight crime under the ‘peaceful environment’ program; campaigns to increase parents’ responsibility in disciplining children and teachers providing information on civic education under ‘responsible citizens’ program; campaigns to increase the responsibility of the Police, and providing information according to the right to information mentioned in article 27 of the Constitution under the ‘responsible Police’ program; special campaigns to reintegrate inmates to the society under the ‘reintegration program’; campaigns on human trafficking under the ‘human dignity’ program.
