Immigration Department should make groups bringing in foreign nationals more responsible: Home Minister

Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has called on Immigration Department to make agencies bringing in foreign nationals more responsible.

Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day workshop on human trafficking conducted by Department of Immigration and International for Migration, Dr Jameel said that unless this problem is resolved now, Maldives will face serious challenges in the future.

“When we talk about foreign nationals committing crimes and such things - I would like to request Immigration Department to work towards making groups bringing in foreign nationals more responsible,” Dr Jameel said.

He also mentioned that foreign nationals’ travel documents are destroyed when they arrive in Maldives, and they are forced to do various types of work.

“We are all Muslims, and we are members in several organisations advocating protection of human rights. Every human being is of important status – I hope this workshop helps teach that fact,” Dr Jameel said.

Delegate of International for Migration Mr Richard said that the problem of human trafficking is faced by every country in the world, and efforts to solve this problem should be made at government level and individual level.

“This workshop will provide a lot of information on human trafficking,” Mr Richard said.

The workshop id attended by government institutions, private groups and media operators.
