The parliament has accepted the amendment bill proposed by Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir, to move articles regarding councils included in the Constitution, to the Decentralisation Act.
The amendment bill was accepted with 50 votes in favour.
The bill states that the articles in the Constitution regarding the validity duration of councils and the procedure on electing council presidents and vice presidents, should instead be included in the Decentralisation act.
Presenting the bill to the parliament, Amir highlighted the importance of describing in more detail than is done in the Constitution, the procedures related to the decentralisation system; as well as ensuring public participation in the election of council presidents and vice presidents.
