Today’s parliament sitting has also been suspended following protests by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) - where MPs used megaphones, horns and whistles.
As soon as the session began this morning, some MPs of MDP left their seats and approached the Speaker’s desk, calling for the release of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The live broadcast has been cut off, making it impossible for the public to follow the events.
Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail told Sun Online that the sitting has been suspended, and will resume at 1:30 p.m.
MDP members have protested at every parliament sitting this year, calling for Nasheed’s release.
Pro-government MPs have held debates amid the protests, by using headsets. They are often approached at their desks and obstructed by MPs of MDP during the debates.
Items on the agenda for today’s parliament sitting include debate on the amendment proposed by the government to the Political Parties Act, and sending the issue of approval for Ahmed Zuhoor as Minister of Health, to the committee for assessment.
