Nasheed sentenced to 13 years in jail

Summary
Police have commenced efforts to break up the protest, after protesters attempted to break through the barricades. Former President Mohamed Nasheed has, prior to entering Justice Building for the final hearing on the terrorism charges against him this evening, urged his supporters to “be strong”. The hearing had been scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at Criminal Court. As he got off the police vehicle, Nasheed attempted to walk past the entrance of Justice Building and on to the street to talk to reporters, but was blocked by police.

Nasheed's sentence also says that within the Islamic Shariah, there's was no need for Nasheed's lawyers to step back from the case.

Home minister tweeted that he has asked the Police to keep President Nasheed in Dhoonidhoo Detention Center until a special unit is constructed in Maafushi Prison.

Before any action was taken to disperse the crowd, police arrested a protester under a court order. Police said that he was arrested in relation to information received by Police Intelligence, for planning to carry out illegal activities.

Several arrests have been made, and protesters have been pushed back from the area cordoned off by police.
