Maldives has called on its trading and development partners to recognize and consider the economic vulnerabilities and structural handicaps of the country.
Speaking at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held in Doha from 21 to 26 April 2012, Minister of Economic Development Ahmed Mohamed said that despite its graduation from the list of least developed countries, the Maldives has a narrow economic base inherently subjected to a host of economic and environmental vulnerabilities beyond domestic control.
“External shocks are felt deeply, throughout the economy,” reads the statement released by Economic Ministry in relation to the Minister’s speech.
UNCTAD was established in 1964 with the primary goal to “maximize the trade, investment and development opportunities of developing countries and assist them in their efforts to integrate into the world economy on an equitable basis."
