Bolivar beats Santos 2-1 in Copa Libertadores

SAO PAULO (AP) — Defending champion Santos lost 2-1 to Bolivar in the high altitude of La Paz on Wednesday in the first leg of their round-of-16 match in the Copa Libertadores.

Bolivar striker Jhasmany Campos scored from free kicks in each half.

In Wednesday's other game, two-time champion Internacional was held to a scoreless draw at home by Fluminense in the first leg of their all-Brazilian match.

In La Paz, Campos opened the scoring just two minutes into the match with a powerful shot from long range. The ball struck the post and bounced off the back of Santos goalkeeper Rafael before going in.

Campos struck again with another free kick in the 75th minute, firing a shot over the wall and into the top left corner of the net.

Santos' goal came with defender Maranhao in the 35th. Elano's free kick was partially saved by Bolivar goalkeeper Marcos Arguello but the ball wasn't cleared by the defense in time before Maranhao blasted it into the net.

Santos striker Neymar was hit in the face by an unidentified object while taking a corner late in the second half but was not seriously injured.

Neymar nearly equalized in the final minutes, but his shot from just inside the area was tipped over by Arguello. Neymar is one goal shy of his 100th career score with Santos, the Brazilian club made famous by Pele in the 1960s.

The 20-year-old Neymar left the field loudly complaining of the tough fouls on him.

"This is not over yet, we still have the return match to play," Neymar said.

Santos was satisfied with a one-goal loss, acknowledging the difficulty of playing the Bolivian opponent at altitude, and will be expected to overturn that deficit in the second leg next month in the coastal conditions of Santos, outside Sao Paulo.

In the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, Argentine playmaker Jesus Datolo missed a 58th-minute penalty for Internacional.

Datolo had his shot from the spot saved by Fluminense goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri, who dived to his left to deflect the ball wide at the Beira-Rio stadium.

The penalty was awarded when Fluminense defender Anderson fouled Leandro Damiao inside the area as Internacional's star striker prepared for a shot on goal.

Fluminense had one of its best chances just a minute later when forward Rafael Sobis fired a dangerous cross shot from inside the area, forcing Internacional goalkeeper Muriel to make a difficult save.

Internacional played without injured Argentine playmaker Andres D'Alessandro because of a muscle injury sustained in the win over Veranopolis in the Rio Grande do Sul state championship on Sunday. D'Alessandro will be sidelined for about a month, which means he also won't be available for the return match in Rio de Janeiro in two weeks.

Fluminense, the Copa Libertadores runner-up in 2008, finished the group stage with the best campaign among all clubs, while Internacional advanced as the worst team among those that reached the second round of Latin America's most important club competition.
