The majority party in the government Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has issued a press release urging the Elections Commission, the Prosecutor General, and the Police to investigate the threat of a suicide attack against the President Abdulla Yameen.
The press release says the threat supports terrorism and must be subject to an extensive investigation.
The press release says, “We strongly oppose the remark made in the demonstrations taking place blocking the commercial areas in Malé, led by former President Mohamed Nasheed and Leader of Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim, to depose the current government even if it means having to carry out a suicide attack against President Yameen.”
PPM says the purpose of the joint MDP-JP demonstrations is to obstruct projects inaugurated by President Yameen to ensure peace and harmony, and disrupt the social, political, and economic stability.
“The efforts by opposition groups to disrupt stability – by coming up with different versions of the story but failing to reveal how the government has violated the constitution - is proof that the leaders of these demonstrations are not responsible people,” the press release says.
