The island council has said that the Laamu atoll island has been in need for electricity for the last two days.
Speaking to Sun last night, vice president of the Mundoo council Hawwa Huzaima said they lost power last Saturday around 4 in the morning due to a problem with their generators. And since then, the island had no electricity at all.
“The island has 25KW, 40KW and 70KW generators. We use the 24KW and 40KW generators for power. The fuel pump on the 25KW generator is broken. The 40KW generator has its mount broken. We have been working 24 hours to fix the two,” Huzaima said.
She said that the 70KW is not functional because the council lacks the financial capabilities to run the generator, and the people of the island have decided and proposed to handover the powerhouse to FENAKA Corporation but has got no response as of yet.
“We have decided to handover the people’s powerhouse to FENAKA Corporation in last April. Eight months have passed and we’ve got no response. We have worked three months to get a reply. Still no reply from them,” Huzaima said.
Indicating the difficulties due to lack of electricity, Huzaima said that the shops are transferring their frozen goods to houses of the nearby island Maabaidhoo.
Managing director of FENAKA Corporation Mohamed Nimal confirmed that the island council has proposed to hand over the Mundoo powerhouse to the Corporation, and research is being conducted before the handover process.
“Other than Mundoo, Meedhoo and Ungoofaaru from Raa atoll have proposed to give us their powerhouses. But if we take control without proper research, we cannot resolve the problem in a near future and that would worry the citizens of the island. And sometimes, when we take the generators, the powerhouse is in the middle of the island and the people want us to move it. So we need to be prepared when we take over,” Nimal said.
Nimal also added that to resolve the power crisis in Mundoo, a team from FENAKA Corporation will go to the island tomorrow morning to provide equipment and technical assistance.
