Employers advised to exercise caution when recruiting foreign workers

The Department of Immigration and Emigration has advised employers to exercise caution when recruiting foreigners for work in Maldives.

In a statement issued today, the department said that it had come across many instances where the registered recruiter, when questioned about issues related to foreigners in their employment, say that the foreigners arrived in Maldives without their knowledge.

According to the statement, as a result, the department receives complaints from the party that is registered as the recruiter of the foreigner when action is taken against them in relation to issues related to foreigners in their employment.

Moreover, complaints of foreigners being left on the streets to fend for themselves – also without the knowledge of the registered recruiter – is also on the rise, read the statement.

Immigration Department said that efforts were ongoing to take action against offenders and strengthen procedures to prevent these problems, and advised recruiters to exercise caution in the meantime.
