Criminal Court has ruled to withhold the driving licence of Hussain Afeef for ten years for running into Police Constable Misbah Abdulla on a motorcycle, which resulted in the police officer's death.
Hussain Afeef was charged by the State with dangerous driving following the incident which took place at 3:56 a.m. on 2 June 2013, while Misbah was on duty at Jetty 1 on Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé.
Misbah died the next morning while being treated for the injuries.
Criminal Court’s sentence delivered on 31 December 2014 states that witness statements and doctors’ reports presented in court showed that Hussain Afeef ran into Misbah on his motorcycle, and Misbah died while being treated for injuries sustained in this accident.
An official of Prosecutor General’s Office said that according the investigation by Maldives Police Service, sufficient evidence did not exist to prove that Hussain Afeef’s actions when he ran his motorcycle into Misbah were intentional, and he was therefore not charged with deliberate murder.
