Prison officer banished for three months for giving mobile phone to prisoner

Criminal court has sentenced a prison officer to banishment for three years for giving a mobile phone to a prisoner.

The sentence against Mohamed Gasim, Maimathige, Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo, was delivered on Monday.

The court said that based on evidence presented by the State, Gasim, who was on duty on 17 August 2011, was found guilty of giving a mobile phone to a prisoner in Cell 3 in Malé Prison.

The court also said that this was the first criminal conviction for Gasim.
