Approval for Vice President and ministers on tomorrow

Approval for Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen and fourteen cabinet ministers is on the agenda of tomorrow’s Parliament session.

The voting will take place after the report by Government Accountability Committee on this issue is presented in the Parliament. The Committee, where majority of members belong to parties in the coalition government, had green-lighted granting approval for the VP and ministers. The Committee had also decided to present names of the ministers individually to the Parliament to ask for approval.

Because this issue is on the agenda, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has made the decision to not participate in tomorrow’s meeting. They indicated that the government came into power through a coup; a Parliament session to grant approval for ministers of such a government would not be legitimate. They called on all MDP members to exercise patience while the approval voting is conducted at the Parliament session tomorrow.

However Progressive Party of Maldives issued a three-line whip to approve of the VP and ministers. Other pro-government parties such as DRP, Jumhooree Party and Gaumee Party have also decided to grant approval for VP and ministers.
