Giovinco joins Toronto from Juventus earl

MILAN (AP) — Juventus allowed Sebastian Giovinco to join MLS side Toronto FC early Monday as it re-signed Alessandro Matri on loan.

The final day of the transfer window also saw several other players rejoin former clubs, with Luca Antonelli returning to AC Milan, Marco Borriello signing up for a third spell at Genoa and Davide Santon moving back to Inter Milan on loan from Newcastle.

Giovinco was due to link up with his new Canadian club in July, once his Italian contract expired, but Juventus confirmed the forward, known as the Atomic Ant, has ended his time in Turin.

"Having Sebastian join us in time for training camp is incredibly important for our team and our plans this ?year," Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said. "Because he was so driven to join his new team now, Seba and his agent took it upon themselves and went to great lengths to negotiate his release from Juventus. That speaks volumes about his commitment to this team, the leadership he brings, and the fact that he is fully behind our vision for the long term."

Matri spent two and a half seasons with Juventus, winning two league titles, before he was bought in 2013 by AC Milan, whose manager at the time was current Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

The 30-year-old Matri is still owned by Milan, but was on loan at Genoa and Juventus came to an agreement with the club to sign him until the end of June.

Antonelli and fellow Italy defender Gabriel Paletta have signed until 2018, taking Milan's number of new players to six.

Milan has also signed Alessio Cerci, Suso, Salvatore Bocchetti and Mattia Destro in a busy transfer window for the Italian giant as it bids to turn around its season.

Antonelli, who has seven Italy caps, progressed through the ranks at Milan, but made only one senior appearance before signing for Parma in 2008.

Paletta joined from Serie A struggler Parma. The 28-year-old made his Italy debut last year and was part of the Azzurri's disappointing World Cup campaign.

Borriello spent the 2007-08 season at Genoa in a co-ownership deal with Milan and was the league's third highest goalscorer. He was also the club's top scorer in 2102-13, on loan from Juventus, as he helped Genoa avoid relegation.

Borriello has not made an appearance this campaign for Roma, which signed two strikers at the weekend, with the arrival of Seydou Doumbia and Victor Ibarbo.

Roma also signed Argentine defender Nicolas Spolli from Catania on loan with option to buy.

Elsewhere, Fiorentina brought in Aleandro Rosi on loan from Genoa as well as completing the loan signing of fellow winger Mohamed Salah from Chelsea as part of the deal which saw Juan Cuadrado move to Stamford Bridge.

Juventus and Inter also signed promising Brazilian teenagers, with Filipe joining the defending champion from Gremio and fellow defender Italo Santos De Oliveira linking up with Roberto Mancini's side.
