Mundhu appointed as a Chairman of WHO

Minister at President’s Office Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has been appointed as the Chairman of WHO Executive Board Committee.

He was appointed as the Chairman in a special meeting held in Geneva on Sunday to select Board members. This is the second time Maldives represented the Chairmanship of that Board. Former Health Minister Dr. Maryam Shakeela was previously appointed to that post of the Board.

34 experts from Health Sectors of different countries were selected for a three year term to the Board in the meeting held on Sunday. Maldives had become a member of that Board and started attending Board meetings from 2012 onwards.

The main objectives of 136th session of the Executive Board, which is scheduled from 16 January to 3 February are to propose an agenda for the Health Assembly, to formulate policies and to discuss about communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The main functions of the Executive Board are to give effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it and generally to facilitate its work.

Discussions were held in the meeting about Ebola; the dangerous disease which is being spread in South Africa.
