Man gets four months in prison for attacking police officer

Mohamed Riffath, Meenaaz, Kaafu Thulusdhoo, has been sentenced to four months in prison for attacking a police officer.

The Criminal Court said in its verdict yesterday that Riffath was found guilty of attacking a police officer in Thulusdhoo at around 8:00 a.m. on 27 February 2011.

The court said that according to witness testimonies, Riffath attacked Police Sergeant Hussain Naeem in the head using a bottle, while efforts were ongoing by the police to calm a crowd that had gathered in the area.

The state also pressed charges against another individual for joining Riffath in the attack, but the charges could not be proved in court.

Riffath was sentenced under the Police Act, which states that the maximum sentence for this crime is six months in prison.
