Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi has said that the new Penal Code, recently passed by the parliament, opens the door for establishing criminal justice in the Maldives.
Abdulla Didi made this remark while speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Maldives Penal Code 2014’, a seminar on providing information on the new Penal Code to the judicial sector.
“Today, when efforts are ongoing to strengthen the criminal justice system in order to reach the standard of the judiciaries of other democratic countries around the world, the passing of the Penal Code opens the door for judges and everyone leading the efforts towards establishing criminal justice in the Maldives, for ensuring that the responsibilities in this regard are fully carried out.”
He said that the new Penal Code, which would come into effect soon, defines criminal offences, and explains in detail crime categories, crime degrees, penalties, and policies on determining penalties.
Abdulla Didi thanked the Commonwealth for organising the seminar and for its assistance towards strengthening the local judicial system.
