Notice on Shahid

The notice to inform of the no-confidence vote to be taken on Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, as requested by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been sent out.

Parliament Secretary General Ahmed Mohamed said today that following Parliament rules of procedure, the notice was sent out to Shahid and Members of Parliament last Thursday.

“The notice has been sent out to the Speaker, according to the rules of procedure. The process as described in the regulations will be followed,” Ahmed Mohamed said.

The Parliament rules of procedure indicate that the notice to MPs and the Speaker of Parliament must be sent within three working days of presentation of a no-confidence motion endorsed by a minimum fourteen members. This should be followed by a period of ten working days, after which the issue should be presented in a Parliament session.

Twenty seven MDP Parliamentary Group Members endorsed a no-confidence motion on Shahid, accusing him of making serious parliament-related decisions without discussion and based on his own judgement. However Shahid has claimed that the accusations are unsubstantial and untrue.
