Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held a protest on the main roads of Male’ calling for an early election.
The protest commenced at Usfasgandu, the area behind Dharubaaruge, and ended at sunset at Usfasgandu as well.
Protesters called for the resignation of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and to hold an early election.
Earlier, MDP called for the resignation of President Waheed and to hold an early election under the supervision of Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid; however today they called for the resignation of Speaker of Parliament as well.
MDP has tabled a vote of no-confidence against Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, claiming that he makes decisions based on his own judgment.
Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), which is part of the coalition government, has responded to this issue by saying that MDP would not get enough votes in the parliament to pass a no-confidence motion on the Speaker.
